Kinja.com

Meg Hourihan along with Nick Denton of Gawker Media created Kinja. It began as an investigation into the navigation of web logs. It was dubbed as Kinja in October of 2003. Kinja was first launched in April of 2004. Kinja still seams to be in in beta form .

Kinja is a personal web service that allows its users to "bookmark" blogs. It provides the user with recent posts of the chosen blogs. These are known as personal "digests". They are visible in one single page. We can categorized compilations available based on such labels as media, music, liberal, conservative, and more.

A user can mke his digest available to any outside user . He can share his favorite blog posts. Utilizing a webcrawler called Kinjabot, (similar to Google's webcrawlers) Kinja creates an internal index of all available web logs as defined by Kinjabot.

Secure Gmail

Gmail is more secure than most other mails .Here are some of it' s features.

  • Gmail lets you have a secure HTTPS session via https://gmail.google.com/ . Few other mail services offer HTTPS session .
  • It has a default SSL-enabled login page. Many other free webmails have non-SSL login as default and Some offer SSL login as an option.
  • Gmail does not display's images when you receive a mail from unknown source. Why does it do so. Spammers put up some code behind image if you open then image they get to know that your id is active and they start spamming your account. Most mail providers provide this but only for SPAM folder. Gmail provides it for all the folders.
  • Gmail does not allow ".exe" files as attachments. This is allowed in most mails.
  • Unlike other mails Gmail scans your mail every time you open it in case it missed out some thing during initial scanning

Text ads in Gmail

Click on image for a clearer view

Gmail ads are not at all a problem. Most Mail services scan your mail for Virus/Spam and things like that. The only difference between them and Gmail is that in addition to spam Gmail also scans for keywords .

Thes ads are text ads unline other mails where we have a Flashy banner. Most of the time these ads are irrelevant. Gmail users will see ads and links to related pages. The ads are text ads thus increasing the speed of gmail. The "Related pages" are are not paid advertisements but are put up by google for our benifit.

In Gmail, ads appear alongside messages, in the same way that ads appear next to search results on Google. The ads are clearly identified as 'Sponsored Links.' They are displayed in a way that doesn't interrupt users as they read their messages and ads are never inserted into the body text of either incoming or outgoing Gmail messages. No email content or other personally identifiable information is ever shared with advertisers. No ads reflecting sensitive or inappropriate content is shown .

Forever on Gmail

In my college comp when i went to Gmail i found that my friend had forgotten to log out. Luckily it was me .I quickly it signed out and continued with it.

Though this is a boon for some i personally hate it. In this case i really love Yahoo mail. Once you close the browser with in 10-20 secs you automatically get logged out or at least it asks for password.

Once you login Gmail keeps you For ever logged in(ok not forveer but for a long time). On Netscape/Mozilla/Firefox, if you close the Gmail you're still signed in.

Incase of firefox if youi close the browser you get logged out but if you close only the tab you dont get logged out.If some one opens a new tab he can still access your account

Anybody can who goes to Gmail automatically get logged into your account. So next time you It's just good habit to sign out from Gmail session by clicking on "Sign out" link on the top right corner.

Youtube Story

YouTube was born when the founders (Hurley, Chen, and Karim) wanted to share some videos from a dinner party with friends in San Francisco. It was January 2005, and they couldn't figure out a good solution. Sending the clips around by e-mail was a bust: The e-mails kept getting rejected because they were so big. Posting the videos online was a headache, too. So they got to work to design something simpler.

In 11 months the site became one of the most popular on the Internet because the founders designed it so people can post almost anything they like on YouTube in minutes. Members, who can comment on videos and set up their own sites on YouTube, add tens of thousands (or more) new videos a day. Steve Chen points out that "From Day One we concentrated on building a service and community around video. That made us a lot different from the iTunes and the Googles out there."

Like many technology start-ups, YouTube was started as an angel-funded enterprise in a small and inexpensive office or garage. In November of 2005, venture capital firm Sequoia Capital invested an initial $3.5 million additionally, Roelof Botha, partner of the firm and former CFO of PayPal, joined the YouTube board of directors. In April 2006, Sequoia put an additional $8 million into the company, which had experienced a boom of popularity and growth in just its first few months

During the summer of 2006, YouTube was one of the fastest-growing websites on the World Wide Web, and was ranked as the 5th most popular website on Alexa, far outpacing even MySpace's growth. According to a July 16, 2006 survey, 100 million clips are viewed daily on YouTube, with an additional 65,000 new videos uploaded per 24 hours. The site has almost 20 million visitors each month, according to Nielsen/NetRatings, where around 44% are female, 56% male, and the 12- to 17-year-old age group is dominant. YouTube's preeminence in the online video market is staggering. According to the website Hitwise.com, YouTube commands up to 64% of the UK online video market.

Twitter

Twitter is a social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send "updates" (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, email, the Twitter website, or an application such as Twitterrific. Twitter was founded in March 2006 by San Francisco start-up company Obvious Corp.

Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and also instantly delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone is the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application. For SMS, currently three gateway numbers are available: short codes for the USA and Canada and a UK number for international use. While the Twitter service is free, posting and receiving updates via SMS may incur charges from the wireless carrier. Several third parties offer posting and receiving updates via email.

Odeo

Odeo is an online application that allows for recording and sharing podcasts with a simple Macromedia Flash-based interface. It also contains a directory and radio, with podcast channels. Odeo was developed by founders Noah Glass who founded Audioblog and Evan Williams, who previously founders Pyra Labs respectively, and received funding from Charles River Ventures.

Initially this was held by both. Subsequently, Williams bought out Charles River's interest in the company, as well as several other investors, and reformed the organization under a new company, Obvious Corp.

Odeo did'nt see as much success as some of their older products like blogger. They neither made any profit nor loss out of this site. It was all a waste of time.

On February 19, 2007, Evan Williams wrote in his blog that Odeo was for sale. Since late March the site no longer seems to have any new podcasts added.

On May 9, 2007 New York-based Sonic Mountain acquired Odeo. Sonic Mountain, in turn, has been acquired by the Amergence Group.

Currently it has a Alexa ranking of 10k+ (10,000+).

Visit Odeo.com

Evan creates Obvious

The co-founder of Pyra labs & the original creator of Blogger is now the founder of Obvious Corp. He founded this company after he left Google.

As a part of this company he has created Odeo.com & Twitter.com. Though Odeo has not seen much success but Twitter has seen some.

Odeo is not making any profit at the same time it's making no loss either. Now they are even considering selling it. This what they carry on their site/blog

"If you're interested in Odeo and can make a serious offer—either in cash or the ability to invest in it while we retain some equity—email me (ev AT obvious) for more details."

Evan is no longer with Google.

ON October 5, 2004, CNET News.com reported that Evan williams the founder of Blogger leaves Google.

This is what they carried

"Google confirmed that the founder of its blog unit is leaving the company.

Evan Williams, who launched Pyra Labs in 1999 to facilitate other people's Web logs, announced his imminent departure from Google--appropriately enough--in a blog posting.

"Yes, I'm leaving my baby (or is it an adolescent by now?)," Williams wrote Monday. "As of this Friday, I will no longer be employed by Google." "

Google acquired Pyra Labs and its Blogger service in February 2003 to attract loyal Web site visitors and perhaps even generate profits.

After acquiring Blogger, Google rescinded fees for premium services and revamped the site.

MEG Hourihan

Meg Hourihan co-founded Pyra Labs, the company behind Blogger before its acquisition by Google. She worked with Pyra labs for quiet some time but left it as the coumpay was out of cash. She now runs a weblog at Megnut.com .

Williams and Meg Hourihan co-founded Pyra Labs to make project management software, but parts of the application were used to create Blogger, one of the first web applications for creating and managing blogs. The company survived despite the departure of Hourihan and other employees, and was eventually acquired by Google.

Williams left Google in 2004 to co-found Odeo, a podcasting company. In late 2006, Williams co-founded Obvious Corp with Biz Stone and other former Odeo employees. Obvious has acquired all previous properties of Odeo, Inc., including Odeo and Twitter, another project started by Williams.

Although i found the menu/ navigation bar was shorter than usual but didn't think this was the reason. It even had a section called "expression" where Buyukkokten himself selected the photos.

The Answered first Half of the readers .Now Answering the second half " Why???" the reason is First half. Not many visited it Simply waste of time & memory .This may be the reason Why orkut deleted it.

And to Follow the trend I tool have removed the label Orkut media recently. Ok the truth is it had only 2 post so this was an good time to do it.They have been sifted suitably to other label like "Orkut info".

Orkut Hacked

There are rumours that Google's Orkut Security Been Hacked. Darnell of InsideOrkut.com doubted if the Orkut security was hacked .Many people experienced deletion of many of their community mostly hate communities in a very short span of time. Even Orkut's First community " Stanford University" was deleted but after a brief span, the Stanford community was restored. Some people ven scrapped telling that their profiles got deleted suddenly.

Jerry of Orkutplus.blogspot.com claims that it could be possible that some people have acquired access to details using social engineering techniques like cookie stealing and phishing. So Orkut should encourage these employees to reset their login details and should also reset their cookies. There is high probability that some people are still holding access to such accounts.

Recently one gyu scrapped me syaing that profile got deleted for no reason. I first though it may be same as the huy zing story. This could also be due to that hack.

So is orkut hacked Even if it is Google wont reveal it.Recently Google's privacy policy & methods egiven the lowest score. If this news is anything to go by then Google has some verrrrrry verrrrry important issues to tackle.

Orkut Hacking

(From http://tech4sure.blogspot.com)

Google uses a 4 Level Orkut login which makes it difficult to hack using brute force method.
1st Level Security-SSL or 128 bit secured connection
2nd Level Google account checks for cookie in the sytem of user
3rd Level Google provides a redirection to the entered User information
4th Level Google doesn't use conventional php/aspx/asp coding so impossible to attack using input validation attack!!

It is not an easy task to break this security! But still some people manages to get access to other accounts. The question concerned is How they do it? Many of them just use simple tricks that befool users and then they themself leak out their password. Here are some points you need to take care of, to prevent your Orkut account being hacked!

Phishing Attack is the most popular way of stealing other's password. Popular by the name of fake login (among those who knows it!!) the users land on a page where they are asked for their login information and they enter their username and password thinking it to be a real page but actually it is other way round. It submits all the details entered to the programmer or the coder.

Community Links: Many times you are provided with a link to a community in a scrap. Read the link carefully, It may be something like http://www.okrut.com/Community.aspx?cmm=22910233 OKRUT not ORKUT. Clicking on this link will take you to a fake login page and there you loose up your password.

Orkut New Features: I have come across a page that looks like they are giving the user a choice of selecting new features for orkut with your ID and password, of course!! When user submit the page, there goes his ID and password mailed to the coder.

Java script: You must have seen the circulating scraps that asks you to paste this code in your address bar and see what happens! Well sometimes they also leak out your information. Check the code and if you are unsure of what to do, then I recommend not to use it.

Primary mail address: If by some means a hacker came to know password of your Yahoo mail or Gmail, which users normally keeps as their primary mail address in their Orkut account, then hacker can hack Orkut account by simply using USER ID and clicking on 'forget password'.This way Google will send link to the already hacked primary email id to change the password of the Orkut account. Hence the email hacker will change your Orkut account's password. Hence your Orkut account hacked too.

So a better thing would be to keep a very unknown or useless email id of yours as primary email id so that if the hacker clicks on 'Forgot password' the password changing link goes to an unknown email id i.e. not known to the hacker.
Hence your Orkut account saved.

If you would like to share something, comment here and I will add up here with a credit to your name.

Gtalk- Click-To call

Google has enterd a new segment of adverstising . Google and eBay have signed an agreement around text-based advertising and "click-to-call" advertising, in which Google Talk and Skype will power voice calls between customers and merchants. (Read the full press release here.)

Google and eBay also plan to integrate and launch "click-to-call" advertising functionality within eBay's U.S. and international marketplaces and Google's search platform. The click-to-call capability will allow a user to click on a link or icon within a product or service advertisement to initiate an Internet voice call to participating eBay merchants or Google advertisers directly from either company's respective sites, using Skype or Google Talk.

Click-to-call advertising is an emerging e-commerce model that brings buyers and sellers together by opening up new ways for advertisers and merchants to generate customer leads using the Internet. It is particularly valuable for merchants or advertisers who may not have a website, or who currently use channels such as local directories to reach potential customers.

Starting in the near future, Skype will offer its users the option to download the Google Toolbar, to which Skype will add a custom button. The companies will also explore interoperability between Skype and Google Talk via open standards to enable text chat and online presence

Paul & Google

How did or why did Paul join Google???? Just read along...

Since his young days he always liked the idea of starting an important new company or building something really cool that everyone will use. In college he was interested in founding or joining a software start up, but had no idea how to do that. He wanted to work at silicon valley. Luckily, his friend Chad having taken a job with Intel in Santa Clara, reported that Santa Clara was in fact a part of "Silicon Valley", so he too joined Intel in 1998.

His idea of Silicon Valley was that the streets would be "paved with start ups", and that he would probably run into them all over the place. But the picture was not that rosy. After almost a year spent in the cubicles of Intel, he was ready for something new. He still didn't know much about start ups. Fortunately, at Intel he had a lot of spare time .He had plenty of time to read Slashdot, and so rather than do some kind of intelligent research.

He simply sent his resume to the handful of local start ups that seemed technically interesting.
He never heard back from most of those start ups, expect Google. At the time, they were just a small team of people in a little office on University Ave in Palo Alto. Their product seemed very interesting . He never thought Google could ever fight against the mighty Alta vista.

Gmail Founder

Paul Buchheit

Paul Buchheit is an American computer programmer. He was the creator and lead developer of Gmail, which anticipated many aspects of Web 2.0, including the idea of Ajax, long before that term was coined. He developed the original prototype of Google AdSense as part of his work on Gmail. He also suggested the company's now-famous motto "Don't Be Evil" in a 2001 meeting on company values.

Buchheit grew up in Rochester, New York. He went to school in Ohio .Later went to college at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Before moving on to Google he was a intel employee. He was employee #23 at Google.
Among other things, he came up with the idea for PigeonRank.

He runs a blog called http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com started bu him in march 2007.

Here are some of the picks he has put up on this blog

Gmail Story

Google first told people about Gmail on April 1, 2004. This is April Fool's Day, a day when many people play tricks, so people thought it might be a joke especially since Google already had been known to make April Fool's Jokes (such as PigeonRank). Google said it was not a trick. However, they explained that their real joke had been a press release saying that they would take offshoring to the extreme by putting employees in a "Google Copernicus Center" on the Moon. Jonathan Rosenberg, Google's vice-president of products, was quoted by BBC News as saying, "We are very serious about Gmail."

Gmail was a project begun by Google developer Paul Buchheit years before it was ever announced to the public. For several years, the software was available only internally, as an email client for Google employees. It was hosted under the code name Caribou, a reference to a Dilbert comic strip about Project Caribou.

Before being acquired by Google, the gmail.com domain name was used by the free e-mail service offered by Garfield.com, online home of the comic strip Garfield. This free e-mail service has moved to e-garfield.com.

Gmail also initially received a lot of criticism for a statement they made in their original terms of use, refusing to guarantee that all e-mails at Gmail would be deleted upon request by the user. Google later clarified that they were referring to backup copies of e-mails, and promised that all deleted mails would eventually be expunged completely from their servers. This, along with the feature that advertisements would be generated by software-based scanning of e-mails in order to better target them, gave rise to a controversy on web privacy .
