What if you seldom or never use Gmail chat.You can do some things
1- Use non-chat version of Gmail this makes it a bit faster to load.Link is present at the bottom when you log in to your Gmail
2- If you use labels more often then you can swap their places. You can place the "Quick Contacts" block below the "Labels" block .To do this
- Go to Settings
- Click on the Chat tab.
- You will find "Quick Contacts location" setting
- Select it's position
- Then save changes
