Gmail Chat or Gtalk inside Gmail is byfar the best feature of Gmail.As soon as you login into Gmail Gtalk show's you are online .This contains all the feature of GTalk.

3-You have a option in the menu bar called Chat with Gtalk logo.
Here you can find all your chats that you had in past if you have enabled Chat history.This looks exactly like your inbox mails.If you click on them you can see the entire chat with exact time and time gap.
2- In the quick contact box you can see who all are online.Those online will have a green circle/bullet before their name.The Bullet colouring is same as Gtalk.To chat with them just click on the bullet.
